religious fun with pk

.

we went to mass when we were younger
and a protestant church later on
we read sufi poets, a sadhu called singh,
and found orthodoxy rather fun.

we loved the russian patterns
on easter eggs ornate
while the verses of old master
always cut us to the quick.

nothing human is alien to us,
our father said with eyes agleam.
imagine our surprise when we found out
he was in fact a being from outer space.

pk is a bollywood movie with aamir khan. he’s an alien who lands in india and is astounded by all the forms of religion he sees around him. he is enthralled and disgusted in equal measure as he searches for god among humanity. this is a lighthearted look at what it may have been like if he’d started a family and continued his religious investigations with a generous intent. he finds the spirit of god breaking through in many traditions, and his benign and involved curiosity (in a distant sense, chosen incarnation) in humanity means ‘nothing human is alien to him’, following the pattern of christ, though pk is himself an alien.
